Just when we thought pizza was the perfect food comes the panzarotti–all the ingredients of a pizza folded into a pocket and deep fried, as if someone complained pizza is too healthy. This comforting South Jersey street food has caught on (Paffuto makes the best in the Philly area), but the OG is in Camden at The Panzarotti Spot. While the Spot also serves a huge menu of cheesesteaks, fries, chicken tenders, meatball subs, and other pizza place staples that will get the job done if you’re hungry, the panzarotti are the only reason to go out of your way. The Panzarotti Spot has all the charm of a Philly PATCO station–tile walls, papers printed with Bible passages taped to the wall, and a worn vinyl diner bench you can perch on while you wait. You order online or through the plexiglass. But service is friendly and fast, and you’re not here to dine (good thing, because there aren’t any tables)—you’re here to spend less than $5 for Camden’s original street food. We love the hot tomatoey cheesy goodness oozing out of the crisp crust. There are 19 flavors familiar to any pizza lover: Extra cheese, pepperoni, meat lovers, chicken ranch, and so on. But if it’s your first time here, go for the original. Get one for now, one for the journey home, and another for lunch tomorrow.
