Stood in the middle of Soho like a non-verbal teenage goth, Garlic & Shots is one of Soho’s last surviving dive bars. We first came here in the mid-2000s. Young and happy to down garlic-spiked shots, blissfully unaware of what Rennies was and why anyone would need it. Since then, it hasn’t changed an iota. Most people wander past but once inside, you soon wonder why you haven’t sampled any of Garlic & Shots’ 101 pre-mixed concoctions sooner. The bar has the energy of someone who regards deodorant as optional and its food offering (yes, there is food) is similarly pungent. The garlic pops (deep-fried whole cloves) are a particular delight. If you aren’t interested in food, then enjoy ‘the garden’, or head downstairs to the evening-only crypt bar. It’s dark, sticky, and there’s a coffin table to sink shots at.
