At Magie, basic is back. It says so in giant letters on the wall. The delightfully self-aware wine bar is the see-and-be-seen spot for UM students who just learned what skin contact means (in wine) and groups of 2007 La Salle grads who still rock heavy waterline eyeliner. Dino nuggets are cool here, bacon-wrapped dates aren’t (sorry) dated, and the fridge door to the orange wines is perpetually foggy. Magie is a rare cool kids spot that’s also a judgement-free zone. You can have a photoshoot with your charcuterie board and feel no shame for picking wines based on the label (although the friendly staff will happily guide you to the good stuff). The space is filled with more Victorian couches than an estate sale of a Palm Beach heiress. Those, and the tables on the patio, are all first come, first served. But basic is apparently so back that it’s very hard to find an empty seat on a Friday night. So consider going early on a weekday.
