With more than 150 years to its name, Scholz Garten is older than anybody on the planet. This was the first bar in town and the first beer garden in the country. But despite being born before UT Austin or the State Capitol, it doesn’t feel outdated or smell like mothballs. Scholz Garten is one of the best spots in Austin to enjoy classic German bratwursts, wienerschnitzel, and pretzels the size of bicycle tires in scenery that’s cemented itself as an iconic part of the city’s landscape. Despite its aged bones, Scholz Garten maintains a lively energy, particularly before concerts at the Moody Center or on Longhorn game days. It’s one of the only bars within walking distance of both venues, making it a pre-gaming and tailgating hot spot. Head here for a casual meal of jägerschnitzel and spätzel, or to grab a massive 32-ounce stein of Hofbrau Original before a concert down the road.
