Since the ’80s, you went to Grumpy’s near the Embarcadero for two reasons: to eat an incredible burger and to rub shoulders with newscasters from the nearby local tv stations. And thankfully, even after changing hands in 2025 after a five-year closure, Grumpy’s and their legendary double-pattied burger still stand (and news crews still stop by, too). While the burger is required for any Grumpy’s visit, the rest of the updated menu of salads and grandma pizzas isn’t quite as strong, but still solid. The dining room has also been refreshed and channels a modern saloon with exposed brick, dark wood, and mid-century chandeliers topped with lampshades. One of the few spots in the area open until 9pm, Grumpy’s is far from a late-night spot, but after 5pm, you’ll likely encounter a full (and very loud) dining room that is worth braving, if just to try the burger at least once.
