The P.J. Clarke’s at Hudson Yards is about 50% bar. That’s because the fourth location of this red-checker-tableclothed mini-chain (famous for its classic burger) knows its audience. Workers flock from surrounding office buildings at 5pm on the dot, they definitely don’t want a table, and they’re out by 7pm at the latest. For those two hours, Monday through Thursday, this place is a scene for a very specific post-work crowd, plus a few tourists who stumble in after a visit to the Vessel. If you make it to your second martini in record time, the burger is as safe a bet as it’s always been. That should also be your order for a work lunch, when the place is less rowdy but still busy with business meals, and a server might ask you if you’ve got some time to linger, or if you’re doing the “lunch crunch.”
