Salt Hank’s offers two things to eat: a $28 french dip sandwich that’s big enough to split, and some pretty crunchy potato straws that remind us of a barrel of Utz Potato Stix. The West Village shop is the first from recipe content creator Henry Laporte (aka Salt Hank), known for posting drippy sandwiches, which ooze meat juice and aioli for the perfect thumbnail. The sandwich is pretty delicious—savory, beefy, with just enough funk from the cheese and horseradish in the aioli. And it fits right in on his feed, dripping with seven-hour caramelized onions, shaved prime rib, melted provolone, punchy horseradish mayo, and served with rosemary-scented beef jus. It’s a messy, indulgent sandwich that’s just barely contained by a Frenchette baguette. Getting your hands on one isn’t easy. A steady trickle of devotees (he has more than two million Tiktok followers) line up on Bleecker Street at the counter-service spot—filled with Hank’s cookbook, spice blends, T-shirts for sale, and a few tables—as early as 10:30am from Thursday-Sunday every week (opening time is 11:30am). Shortest on Thursdays, the line is there until they sell out, often around 2pm. If waiting on Bleecker Street isn’t in the cards, walk down the block to Faicco’s, one of our favorite sandwich shops in NYC. But if you don’t mind committing to the line, and you have a morning to spare, go for it. You’ll be paid for your efforts in a delightful sandwich that’ll keep you full all day. Salt Hank's is featured in an episode of our podcast, Restaurant People, where we discuss lining up for restaurants.
