The kouign-amann at this Eagle Rock bakery by the Kumquat people is up there with the best we’ve had in our carb-eating careers. But it comes at a price. Not just $7, but the 30 minutes you’ll have to wait in line for it, even at 10am on a Thursday morning. Fondry’s lines often wrap around the corner, and that’s partially because this beige-walled bakery is tiny. There are a few cramped tables inside and a handful of outdoor seats to enjoy your cheesy mushroom danish, but most people grab their pastries (as early as possible, since they tend to sell out by 2pm) and make a beeline for their car. If you have limited tolerance for lines, you do have options. On weekdays (Wednesday-Friday), the lines are less painful, and you can even pre-order a box of pastries and head straight to the counter for pick-up. You can also get Fondry’s pastries at Loquat and Kumquat, although their supply is even more limited. If all else fails, first-timers should know that these golden, laminated masterpieces are worth the wait.
