In the pantheon of grand old Boston steakhouses, there are two Back Bay stalwarts that stand apart from the crowd: Grill 23 and Abe & Louie’s. While Grill 23 skews extravagant, Abe & Louie’s is a cozier sort of place. There are still sparkly chandeliers galore, but the smaller dining room is made up of more nooks and crannies, with plenty of booths perfect for burrowing while attempting to hibernate and eat steaks through Boston’s dark winters. If you’re dining with a group, go big with the tomahawk for the table. For smaller portions, the eight-ounce ribeye cap steak is the way to go. Skip the million-dollar baked potato with caviar (actual price: $81) in favor of the tableside baked potato, which arrives with a tray full of toppings to load up on. The brown-butter creamed spinach is a must, and the house martinis are served as God intended: paired with a generous sidecar that's kept frosty in a personal ice bucket. Didn’t make a reservation? Good luck elbowing for space at the bar.
