Mid-century modern style is hardly a novelty in Palm Springs, but the aesthetic is particularly well executed at the Royal Sun. Located on the edge of the city’s downtown, this boutique hotel is a longtime fixture on the local scene, and many of its best features date back to its sixties-era origins. The sharply angled canopy over the entrance calls to mind a classic roadside motel, as does the boxy stone facade with its outdoor corridors and bold tangerine-hued details. More eye-catching still are the interiors, notably the sleek bar and restaurant with checkered floors, curved booths, and retro barstools. Rooms are every bit as smart-looking, with minimalist pale-wood furnishings and decorative accents, including fanciful vintage lamps and colorful headboards that resemble the dreamy ombré of a desert sunset. All feature Revival linens and Le Labo bath products, and while most have a conventional layout, a single suite offers a separate living room with a velvet sofa. Royal Sun’s centerpiece is the oasis-like pool, framed by cacti and facing views of the desert landscape. With rows of fringed red and white umbrellas, towering palm trees, and a cool stucco pool house converted into an open-air bar, it’s pitch-perfect Palm Springs.
