Wakkanai is a city located in Sōya Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital of Sōya Subprefecture. It contains Japan's northernmost point, Cape Sōya, from which the Russian island of Sakhalin can be seen. As of 31 August 2023, the city has an estimated population of 31,195 and a population density of 72.8 persons per km2. The total area is 761.47 km2.
