Nashville went from sushi desert status to somewhere full of maki options faster than you can say wasabi. O-Ku, a polished sushi den in Germantown, was one of the original places on the scene. And while there are better sushi options around town now, it still holds its own as a Japanese restaurant that’s a go-to for everything from a group date to a solo meal at the bar. The fish here is sourced directly from famous fish markets in Tokyo and Hawai’i, so it’s really top-notch stuff. Naturally, the strongest dishes let the fish do its thing with minimal ingredients, like the O-Ku nigiri and anything from the classic rolls section of the menu. That’s not to discount some of the flashier options—like the Nashvegas with crab and goat cheese mousse. Although sometimes, the kitchen gets a bit heavy-handed with the sauces and seasonings, like with the usuzukiri starter, where the lava salt overly dominates the dish. The booths work well for a group date situation that might involve a boss and their partner, but we’ve also seen a few sake bombs go down at the bar between friends. Hell, maybe your boss is into sake bombs, too.
