1 Kitchen feels out of place in Downtown. That’s a compliment, by the way. In the midst of the blaring neon lights and faint whiffs of who-knows-what coming off the concrete, this restaurant is a lush escape and a much-needed oasis. It’s a place that you can always rely on for a refreshingly intimate Downtown date night done supremely right. It’s right off the lobby of the 1 Hotel and a great spot to grab some lighter cocktails and bites after work, but you can also book a table for two in the cozy back corner for a date. Surrounding you: lots of natural woods, plants, and rustic touches, turning up the coziness factor up a notch. Your waiter will know a lot about the sustainability features in the dishes, like where they get their kombu come from, but feel free to enjoy your spicy carrot hummus, Hokkaido scallops, and teres major without getting too deep about it. For the particularly inquisitive date, there are gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan labels all over the menu. The cocktails, with minimal ingredients and fresh juices, also feel like they might actually be good for you. Like the savory Umami Tides with gin, dry vermouth, and mushroom and kombu dashi. Afterwards, take it to the 1 Hotel’s rooftop bar for more booze-as-juice drinks—the twinkling lights, fire pits, and Downtown view add a little magic to the mushrooms in your drink.
