We dream about having a neighborhood pizzeria like Redwood Pie around the corner. This barebones shop off the Hermosa Beach boardwalk bakes the best pizza in the South Bay in about ten minutes flat. The New York-style-ish sourdough pies—nearly burnt on the edges yet chewy-soft in the center—arrive so fresh you’ll smell the tart, hand-crushed tomato sauce through the cardboard, and if you’re impatient like us, burn the roof of your mouth on the hot cheese before it has time to cool. Redwood Pie is efficient because it’s simple. For now, the menu consists of just a singular lemony arugula salad and a dozen pizzas in 12-inch and 16-inch sizes. The toppings don’t stray far from traditional Italian. The standout Jersey Pie splatters their bright, pulpy pizza sauce over stringy cheese, while D-Fresh adds punchy pickled serranos that sizzle your lips. Redwood has a few tables on the sidewalk if you prefer to eat your pizza ASAP, but this is mostly a grab-and-go situation. Call ahead to order and you’ll be out the door with pie in hand so fast that you won't even need to feed the meter.
