A name like Hotel Peralada Wine Spa & Golf doesn’t leave much room for elaboration. In fact it’s just what it says it is: a luxury hotel in the Empordà, between Girona and the French border, featuring a working winery and associated vineyards, a luxurious wine-focused spa, and one of the top golf courses on the Costa Brava. And the name leaves out several features, including a casino, a preserved Carmelite convent, and a generous handful of dining and drinking venues. With 55 rooms it’s a happy medium between a boutique hotel and a full-scale resort; its aesthetics resemble the former while its facilities are more in keeping with the latter. The building’s architecture is crafted to blend in with the local tradition, but the interiors are under no such obligation, and are unusually sleek and modern in aspect, though still warm and organic in their materials. Restaurants include a pair of wine bars, a poolside café, a modern Empordàn restaurant called L’Olivera, and Shiro by Paco Pérez, combining Asian and Mediterranean flavors. The culinary crown jewel, however, is the Michelin-starred Castell Peralada, which is set within the walls of an authentic 14th-century castle.
