The Blue Iris is an old Nantucket sea captain’s house, but with a unique twist: this Greek Revival estate has Mediterranean and Portuguese roots, and it’s these influences, rather than the more typical maritime inspiration, that are at the fore today. The setting, in the heart of the historic district, is perfectly placed just a few blocks from the waterfront, ever so slightly removed from the busiest parts of town, yet never too far from the action. And its 12 rooms are memorable, to say the least, wearing their European inspirations on their sleeves, and packed with boutique-hotel details like rain showers and Le Labo bath products. Out back there’s a charming garden patio, complete with a Mediterranean-style fountain, that serves, as the summertime social heart of the hotel; there’s a cozy indoor lounge with a fireplace as well. At its size, Blue Iris is rather more a residential than a resort experience, though what services are offered are offered with a smile — fortunately, the town’s restaurants and bars are plentiful, with the nearest ones just on the other side of Centre Street, mere yards from the hotel’s front door.
