Childress is a city in and the county seat of Childress County, Texas, United States. Its population was 5,737 at the 2020 census. The city and county were named in honor of George Campbell Childress, a native of Nashville, Tennessee, who was the principal author of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The county and city were incorporated more than four decades after Childress' death.
