The village of Vík, known as Vík í Mýrdal in full, is the southernmost village in Iceland. It is located on the main ring road around the island, and is around 180 km southeast of Reykjavík by road. Despite its small size it is the largest settlement for some 70 km around and is an important staging post. It is an important service center for both inhabitants and visitors to the coastal strip between Skógar and the west edge of the Mýrdalssandur glacial outwash plain.
