"NBHD Brulee in Harlem is really close to my heart," says Tubbs, "because it's around the corner from my house. When you walk in, you'll see a copy of Barack Obama's portrait that hangs in the Smithsonian. They have communal tables, a large game of tic-tac-toe, and displayed desserts that include vegan options as well. The smell when you come in is just breathtaking: They use Illy coffee and there's a bar where you can sit down and enjoy items from their food menu."

"This family-owned business run by two brothers from West Africa features their signature Ginjan drink, a ginger juice made fresh in Harlem. Ginjan is perfect for everything: If you have a cold, you should drink this! If you want to use it as a mixer for a cocktail, you can buy it there and take it home. They make amazing crêpes, too!"

"This small-batch Ethiopian coffee was first sent to me in a gift bag, and then I realized there were standalone locations, too! They roast their coffee on site, which is really unique."

"I just got put on to this spot recently: It's run by a Caribbean woman making flaky Southern-style biscuits, and they're the BEST in Brooklyn. It's a place where you'd go to grab your breakfast, get good coffee and good biscuits. They also have an outdoor patio where you can enjoy your coffee."

I typically do not like chai lattes, except for here and at Breukelen Coffee House—they're both the best. Boogie Down Cafe is located in The Bronx, which is the home of hip-hop. The Grand Master Frappe is what keeps me caffeinated and powering through my days along with the sweet sounds of hip-hop.
