Brad Leone seeks out wild cooking adventures on his two YouTube shows, Local Legends and Makin' It. Off screen, he's at home among the hiking trails, pizzerias, and farmhouses of southeastern Connecticut.
Less"The biggest state forest in Connecticut, Pachaug neighbors beautiful Rhode Island and has a huge system of trails in untouched nature. It also has waterfalls, streams, lakes, and 50-plus miles of enduro motor bike trails. It's perfect."
"85th Day Food Community runs a handful of the best restaurants in town, tucked into the historic and beautiful coastal town of Mystic, Connecticut. Restaurants like The Port of Call, Oyster Club, and Engine Room all serve foods locally found here in coastal Connecticut. Run by award-winning chef Renee Touponce, the food and drinks are the best around. Incredible seafood! Tell them Brad sent ya!"
"If you are smart enough to come visit in the summer or fall, definitely stop by this active and beautiful farm, which also produces goods for restaurants in Mystic. It's an old dairy farm that now boasts livestock, produce, a flower farm, and a year-round farmstand, not to mention some of the best pruned gardens I've seen in the States. Fun fact: I worked on a good portion of my book staying at this old farmhouse. It's a gem."
"This is such a beautiful way to see the countryside, especially if you have kids or are really fired up about the autumn foliage. It's tucked into a beautiful forest and winding river. Come during peak fall leaves—buy your tickets ahead of time. Trust me."
"Yes, it's famous for a reason. There are definitely a handful of other spots in town that give ole Pepe a run for the money, but I recommend starting here when going down the rabbit hole of New Haven pizza. Do try the clam pizza."
"This place has the best pho I've had in the area by far—and maybe even ever. It's a small menu, and they only have what they make that day. The broth is from the heavens and will save your soul. Go early because they sell out."
"This old-school food stand has been around for over 100 years. Burgers, dogs, seafood: nothing fancy, but sometimes that's perfect."
"This old-school toy and hobby shop is a blast from the past. I bring my kids here often instead of big-box stores. They have all the good stuff: Legos, models, RC cars, rockets.... It's a lil' mom-and-pop treasure.
"When in town and needing fine food or room-and-board, this is your one-stop shop. You'll find great food set in a very cozy dining room, with its parent hotel above."
