In Cape Town for 24 hours? Explore the best of the city.
Less8 AM : Drop your bag after a night flight to Cape Town at the Dorp hotel which lies on a perch above Bo-Kaap, from which there’s a bird’s eye view of the whole city and, more impressively, a full-on view of Table Mountain. Have breakfast on the terrace before heading into town, a few minutes away by car.
9 AM : Browse the shelves of Clarke’s Bookshop for longed-for, out-of-print books on Southern African topics from history to holistic medicine, along with the newest niche publications on the arts. Everything is beautifully laid out and the staff are incredibly knowledgeable. You might even see President Cyril Ramaphosa and his family roaming the stacks.
10 AM : Explore the work of some of South Africa’s and Namibia’s top furniture designers in a new concept space that showcases storage, furniture, lighting, decor and accessories in a display that is both thrilling, and a fount for new ideas and inspiration. Many well-known names are represented, including Dokter and Misses, as well as a raft of new ones, such as Mash.T Design Studio. This gallery-shop is a place to keep abreast of who’s doing what.
NOON : Head to the Beau Constantia wine farm at the top of the stunning Constantia Valley for a light meal of contemporary, stylish tapas served on handsome ceramics made by the local Mervyn Gers studio.
2PM: Explore Africa’s first concept store and see who’s making waves around the continent. Merchants on Long offers a range of clothing, shoes and accessories that feature some of Africa’s most talented designers – none more so than Laduma Ngxokolo with his knitwear brand Maxhosa by Laguma.
3PM : Take tea at the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel. Never mind the coiffed ladies and vacant old generals sipping Darjeeling, there are rock stars in ripped jeans here too and everyone’s getting on with eating fresh scones with clotted cream and cucumber sandwiches.
5 PM : Discover a range of Africa-inspired gifts at Aafricaa, a small emporium in the V & A Waterfront area that specialises in local ceramics, African textiles and baskets, fashion accessories, jewellery and homeware. Here, contemporary African style is expressed in myriad textures and colours, as well as up-to-the-minute design.
7PM: Prepare for the evening ahead with a massage at The Silo Spa. On the 4th floor of The Silo hotel, it’s the place to experience treatments that are both luxurious and clinically effective using products such as South Africa’s Black Pearl Collection. There is also a gym, sauna and, best of all, access to a rooftop pool from which the views of Table Mountain are unrivalled.
9 PM : Settle down at your (reserved well in advance) table at Salon in Woodstock to see why this is fast becoming a serious foodies’ favourite. Luke Dale-Roberts’ cuisine has been setting the local gastronomic scene on fire ever since the he opened his first (and now closed) restaurant, The Test Kitchen. Prepare for an astounding menu.
11PM : Make an entrance at Gigi Rooftop Bar where the stylish clientele lounges around the pool and on leather sofas in front of book-laden shelves. With views over the sea, the bar is like a mountain eyrie on summer nights. Order one of the Gigi’s tiki-inspired cocktails and wait for the magic to happen.
1 AM : Move to beachside Cabo Beach Club, the sharpest, most glamorous night spot in Cape Town. Patrons with time on their hands might have spent the day here, sunning by the pool. Others come for Champagne or cocktails as the sun sets, followed by a light dinner or a platter of fat oysters. After dark, the DJs come out to play and an impeccably dressed late-night crowd emerges from luxury automobiles to party until dawn.
