LessOwner Ricky Gomez taps his Cuban heritage for the tropically influenced cocktails at this terrific spot. Gomez and bar manager Jordan Valls offer up creative twists on classics — think frozen guava margaritas, roasted coconut Moscow mules, and pineapple gin and tonics. There are no wrong moves here. Tucked in a jewelbox of a subterranean room, Tommy Klus’s homage to global whisky is a must-visit for any cocktail drinker. The Namesake is a fine starting point — with Scotch, cherry liqueur, sweet vermouth, Cynar, and orange bitters. Or, try the rum and Scotch-based Once Upon a Time in the Rain, with notes of chocolate and pineapple. The food menu garners universal raves. Cidermaker Christine Walter is behind the offerings at this taproom, where you can try more than two dozen ciders. Walter’s takes include traditional, modern, and fruited ciders, including single varietals like the Early Bird, made with Gravenstein apples grown on the Bauman’s farm, and co-ferments like Gravenstein Rosé, made with apples, pinot noir, syrah, and viognier. Nick Flower and Adam Robinson’s glowing, disco-ball bedecked bar offers an extensive menu of house drinks, expert dealer’s choice offerings, clever snacks, and free cookies at closing time. The menu is filled with fun options, like a melon and pandan highball and a dirty martini with blue cheese-washed vodka. Bar world luminary Jeffrey Morganthaler helms Pacific Standard, a breezy lobby bar at the Kex hotel. The drinks are all perfectly dialed in, from an easy-drinking strawberry rhubarb Aperol spritz that makes for a nice afternoon tipple, to the bloody Mary, made with Deep Eddy vodka, house bloody Mary mix, and a pickle (it’s a real sleeper hit). This cool spot, sunny by day, vibey by night, features wines, vermouths, and DJs that are constantly spinning to set the ambiance.
