Australians take their coffee very seriously—and singer Dean Lewis is no exception. Here, he shares his favorite cafés to kick-start his mornings. From hidden gems in L.A. to the best brew in Australia, these are his top picks.
Less“I’m from the North Shore, and I never really spent a lot of time in Bondi, but I had a month off and I stayed in a hotel [there] on the water. Two Forks has a nice little couch on the outside, and it was really nice in the morning to get up and just sit there with a coffee. You feel the sun hitting you, there’s all these little amazing dogs walking past and the staff are really nice.”
“I spent two weeks in the Cotswolds, which is like an alien land almost—this beautiful place in England that has beautiful lakes everywhere. And I’d go here every morning, the coffee was really good, and I’d just sit there. It was just a beautiful vibe looking out onto all the swans and all the animals. I absolutely love that café. Highly recommend.”
“The Hidden Kitchen is just a really great place to go and get food. It’s based in Los Angeles, kind of tucked away, and I just go there and write in my notebook. I just really love that—it’s kind of like a bit of a secretive spot.”
“This is a beautiful hotel and resort—I usually don’t go to those places, I’m not a big fancy kind of guy (it was just the only hotel in the area). It’s on this beautiful, picturesque lake that then heads out into the ocean, and I would sit there every morning and just get eggs and coffee. It’s one of the most relaxing places in the world. You’ve got to check it out if you’re in that part of the world.”
“This is run by the incredible Marcel—his dad used to own the café. When I was in Mosman, I would just go to that café every morning. He’s just one of those great dudes who’s a really hard worker, and he’s set it up really nice. I absolutely love it, and I highly recommend it if you’re in Sydney. If you want a nice, quiet place to go with really good coffee—maybe the best in Australia—I’d say go here, it’s awesome. The food’s great too.”
“If you want to get the L.A. feeling, the Coffee Bean on Sunset is the place to go. When I was working for a month in Los Angeles on my songs, I’d go there every day, and it felt so nice to get away. It’s a really nice place for slow days when you want to be around everything but also by yourself.”
“When I first came to L.A., I’d go to this Joe & the Juice. It’s got this really nice sunny spot out the back, and music is pumping on the inside. I just love to go there and write in my notebook in the morning. It’s a great spot.”
“I found this little café run by this guy called Taka, and he is an absolute legend. It’s just this little gem of a spot in the middle of nowhere. He’s a great guy, it’s a great vibe and the coffee is really good. It’s really small—a hole in the wall—but it’s one of those special gems that, if you’re in Los Angeles in that area, you’ve got to check out.”
“This is one of my favourite spots. It’s a hole-in-the-wall burrito place right near the beach in Malibu. I order the breakfast burrito—it is just outrageously good. I will drive down Pacific Coast Highway, stop at the Malibu Country Kitchen, get a burrito and an orange juice, sit there and eat it, and then keep driving. It has that Malibu feeling, and it’s not pretentious—it’s a real special place. If you’re driving on the PCH in Malibu, you’ve got to stop at the Malibu Country Kitchen.”
