Photographer Ethan Barber, known for his timeless romantic captures of NYC, shares his favorite seasonal spots to photograph across the city, from iconic landmarks to hidden gems in the Upper East Side, Soho, and beyond.
Less“One of my favorite photo spots in Central Park, the Gapstow Bridge boasts a near-perfect view of The Pond with the Plaza Hotel standing proudly in the background. If you stand near the west side of the bridge and face south, you’ll get a fantastic vantage point that stretches for miles.”
“One of Central Park’s most iconic pathways, The Mall is lined with towering elm trees that create a canopy stretching across six city blocks. It’s the perfect spot for a photo, no matter the season. Don’t be afraid to plant yourself right in the middle of the walkway so you can get a great shot from either direction.”
“One of my favorite diners to frequent in all of New York City. Whether you’re craving a short stack of pancakes, a burger, or a turkey club, you won’t be disappointed by EJ’s speedy service and touches of classic NYC charm.”
“Since 1915, Butterfield has evolved from a small home-delivery service into a beloved market, catering, and café. As a family-run business, they’re committed to serving delicious, high-quality food with warm service and a strong connection to the community. Make sure to grab some froyo (even in the cold). It’s my absolute favorite treat after a long day!”
“Are you on the hunt for a good novel or that New York Times bestseller everyone’s raving about? The Corner Bookstore is a small shop with a surprisingly large selection and a strong sense of community. It quickly has become one of my favorite places in the city to pick up a good book. I recently grabbed a novel titled Killers of a Certain Age that I can’t wait to dive into once the holiday rush is over.”
“Alwyn Court is a breathtaking 13-story building that sits along Seventh Avenue. Its intricate French Renaissance exterior was completed in 1909 and still preserves its historic architectural details.”
“The Museum of Modern Art is my favorite museum in the city! From classics like van Gogh’s The Starry Night to innovative exhibits from rising modern artists, it’s the perfect curated mix. Whenever I need inspiration, you’ll find me wandering the photography and design galleries. If you have time to visit only one museum in the city, MoMA wins for me every time!”
“Rough Trade is the best spot for new releases from your favorite artists. They regularly host album signings, live performances, and listening parties, and have exclusive vinyl pressings you won’t find anywhere else. My biggest flex? I got to meet Charli XCX here during Brat release week and it was so Julia.”
“Open every weekend, rain or shine, the Chelsea Flea is one of my favorite markets to frequent. I’ve found so many incredible gems here, from vintage lighting to art books, jewelry, vinyl records, and more. If you’ve got a free Saturday morning and some cash in your pocket, this is the place to be!”
“One of the best vintage furniture stores the city has to offer. With antiques and vintage pieces sourced from all over the world at prices you won’t believe, I’ve found some of my absolute favorite home decor and furniture pieces here.”
“Founded over 20 years ago, Joe Coffee Company is a family-owned café that serves flawless coffee with warm hospitality. Whether you’re craving a seasonal latte, a delicious sweet treat, or just a humble cold brew with half-and-half (like me), you can’t go wrong with a cup of joe from Joe!”
“With a carefully curated selection of pre-loved luxury at unbeatable prices, I’ve found myself at Tokio7 multiple times a month this past year. Whether you’re hunting for a gently used Bottega Veneta bag, an Acne Studios beanie, or a Celine sweater, you’re bound to find your next favorite piece here.”
“On the hunt for classic New York jazz or looking to discover an entirely new genre? Close Up is an artist-driven jazz club dedicated to advancing the city’s vibrant live music scene. With performances six nights a week, jam sessions, cocktails, and more, it’s a must-visit for any music lover. (I even had my wedding after-party here!)”
“A bookstore, thrift shop, and café operated by the Housing Works organization, which advocates for those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS and homelessness. It’s a must-visit for used-book lovers—and fun fact, it was featured in Taylor Swift’s All Too Well: The Short Film!”
“My go-to for interior inspiration, MoMA Design Store offers carefully curated products that meet high standards of quality and innovation. Over the years, I’ve added many pieces from the store to my home and office, and have yet to regret a single purchase.”
“Nestled above a small alley in Tribeca and completely surrounded by historic buildings and cobblestone streets, the view of the Staple Street Skybridge seemingly transports you right back to the early 1900s.”
