Odeal’s The Summer That Saved Me draws inspiration from his travels around the globe. “It has made me more grateful,” he shares with Apple Maps. Here are the places that hold deep meaning for the singer.
Less“Taro is one of my favorite spots in London. I have lots of memories taking friends and my team here. It’s fantastic Japanese cuisine, and the ambience is great. What to order? Definitely try one of the teriyaki bento boxes to get a taste of different flavors. They also serve great sushi. I’m pretty particular about my sushi; I prefer tempura sushi. This may be unorthodox, but I love to dip in a bit of chili sauce and mayo. So good!”
“Mako is similar to a beach club but not exactly. It’s a waterfront venue in Lagos, essentially a private members club [along Five Cowries Creek]. My friends and I would often come here during our trips back to Nigeria. Typically, we’d visit Mako at night before heading to parties or clubs. This is where I met many of my Nigerian friends. It definitely holds a special place in many young Lagosians’ hearts. It’s a great place to relax, enjoy the sunset, and catch up with people.”
“I do a lot of travel, and I love going to this spot to rehabilitate myself when I’m in L.A. It offers things like cryotherapy treatment and IV drips. I got my first cryotherapy treatment here. It was a nice experience. I looked at it more like a challenge. I went into it, and people were saying most people can’t last the full session, but I completed it. Two and a half minutes. It felt good! Next Health is a great spot to get myself back together after a long weekend or a lot of travel.”
"SOB’s in New York is an iconic venue. I sold out SOB’s on my first mini world tour. That night was special; it was my first time performing in New York. Everyone who came through was amazing. Yeah, it was definitely a cool memory. Honestly, it was a show that had been on my bucket list for a long time. To finally perform here and have it sold out at the same place where Kendrick performed and loads of other incredible artists have passed through—it just meant more to me, you know?”
"Paris is known for its incredible nightlife, and Silencio is one of my favorite clubs in the city. The venue and the atmosphere are exceptional. I’ve had so many great nights at Silencio, truly unforgettable experiences. I’d love to DJ here one day, but until then, I’ll always come here with my friends. It holds a special place in my heart. I’ve met so many amazing people and heard great DJs with fantastic sets, playing everything from piano to house to hip-hop to rap."
"The Jazz Cafe was my first headline show in London. It was very special because it sold out and was totally packed. To this day, it’s probably one of my best shows ever. This was actually the first show I did after I stopped working. I quit my job about six weeks before the Jazz Cafe show because I knew that after this point I wouldn’t go back. That’s why SOB’s felt special too, because SOB’s has a similar vibe to the Jazz Cafe. Both these gigs changed my life."
“After I received my visa documents and could travel freely, I visited places around the world to give me new experiences and inspiration. It's documented in the The Summer That Saved Me series. [Morocco had been on my bucket list,] and I decided to check out an authentic tannery here where they process leather. It’s the largest tannery in Morocco. It was an incredible experience to see how everything was done. I got involved with the people and learned how the leather was washed and cleaned.”
“This is where I met up with my friend Adrian, whom I originally met in Dubai. She was keen on introducing me to yoga. At first I was hesitant, thinking, ‘I’ve never done this before.’ It was difficult initially, really difficult, but after the session I felt more free. Being able to use my body in different ways felt very relaxing. Know what I mean? I felt good realizing that beyond just lifting weights, I could actually be more mobile. My body could move in ways I hadn’t experienced before.”
“I’ve always wanted to check out an authentic Italian pizza spot, and so, as part of my trip to have new experiences, we visited Antica in Naples, one of the oldest and most famous pizzerias. Here, I was taught how to make stone-baked pizza. The owner and his son taught me the process. That was definitely a special moment of my summer. It’s a small, charming restaurant. Very special.”
“This is one of the oldest flamenco houses in Spain, where the earliest style of flamenco dance originated. We filmed an episode of the The Summer That Saved Me series here. This was another really cool experience to see the family tree of the pioneers of this dance style. I also received a tutorial on how to perform the original style of flamenco. That was fun!”
