LessTrausnitz Castle, the seat of government for the dukes of Lower Bavaria, dates to the 13th century. But in the 1400s the 'rich dukes' made some major extensions: the knights' hall, the princes' building and the striking towers were all added. It was also during this period that the lavish Landshut Wedding took place, a wedding that remains famous due to today's mammoth historic reenactment festival. In many ways, Landshut town hall is where the Landshut Wedding reenactment began. In the 1880s the city decided to decorate the state room with murals depicting the 1475 wedding procession. In 1903, two Landshut citizens, Georg Tippel and Josef Linnbrunner, organised the first pageant based on these paintings, a parade with 248 participants. Today, the festival attracts 600,000 visitors. Tap find out more to visit the town hall during the Landshut Wedding with the free Hidden Landshut app.
One of the tallest brick structures on earth, the steeple of St Martin’s Church comes in at almost 131 metres. The construction of a new church began on this site in 1389, a project that lasted until 1500. The steeple alone took 55 years. St Martin’s was also where the marriage ceremony took place between George, heir to the duchy of Lower Bavaria, and Hedwig, daughter of the Polish king. This is where the Italian Renaissance came to town. Formerly the site of the ducal customs house, Duke Ludwig X laid foundations here for a classcising city palace in 1536. Then, after a trip to Italy, where he saw Mantua's Palazzo del Te, a second building was commissioned in 1537. The two were ultimately linked up to produce the spectacular complex you see today. At the lower end of Landshut’s old town sits the gothic Church of the Holy Spirit, built between 1407 and 1461 by Hans von Burghausen, also the master builder of St Martin's. The church belongs to the Holy Spirit Hospital, on the opposite side of the street. This was the first port of call for the sick and elderly, as well as travelers and pilgrims to the city.
