Born and raised in Melbourne, Vance Joy shares his favourite places to visit on the ultimate road trip through Victoria. From famous beaches to the Great Ocean Road to inner Melbourne and more, this is his essential guide to the state.
Less“I spent my childhood summers in Queenscliff. Beautiful Victorian beaches, coastal views, fish and chip shops and small-town charm. Fun fact: My song ‘Riptide’ was loosely inspired by a hotel that we’d stay at here each summer.”
“My family has a house in Flinders and spends most of their spare time here. Now when I return to Australia from tour, we spend our family summers by the beach. Relaxed, small-beach-town vibes for sure. There’s a top-notch general store, a pub and amazing sunrises and sunsets at Mushroom Reef.”
“Red Hill is just a short drive from Flinders Beach. After a day at the beach, this is the place to go to hit up cafés, breweries and wineries. Great bay and back beaches as well.”
“When I had just signed my record deal with Atlantic Records, we took the label rep to visit the Twelve Apostles. It was one for the books: a beautiful clear day, which is not always a given. Apollo Bay is on the way to the Twelve Apostles—it’s worth a stop for the local fish and chips.”
“My bass player, Jono Colliver, is from here. He says it has some of the best beaches in the world and is a stone’s throw from the end of the Great Ocean Road. Multiple beaches around the headland mean a great mix of violent coastlines like the ones near the blowholes or aquamarine surf beaches like Bridgewater Bay. The golf course is great, and it’s common to share a round with koalas watching on.”
“While I lived here for a few years, I enjoyed the walk through All Nations Park to the various cafés and bakeries, and also the blast-from-the-past experience in Northcote Plaza, where the feng shui is just a bit skew-whiff.”
“My mate Will has a family cottage here—it has country town charm. I like the combo of a sausage roll, iced coffee and a dip in the Yarra before it makes its way to the city. Super refreshing.”
“I have special memories here with both my friend Rose, who has a place up the hill from the beach, and also of performing at Falls Festival (now gone). Epic nature: rainforest meeting the ocean. I love the bakery where the cyclists congregate about 15 minutes’ drive farther beyond Lorne on the Great Ocean Road.”
"[Right next to this shop you’ll find] a mosaic bench at the corner of Westgarth and Brunswick Streets, which I like for some people watching."
