G Flip may not be based in Melbourne full-time anymore, but it will always be home. They’ve shared their must-visit places in the city for visitors and locals alike. From Luna Park to the Espy, there’s something for everyone.
Less“The Espy is a large music venue, but it’s also a restaurant, a whiskey bar and a public bar—it’s got everything. I love this place the most because it was [where] I played my first gig when I was 15 years old. It’s around the corner from my house now, and it’s just an institution. I love it very much.”
“This wonderful place is the very first Pride centre in Australia. It is a bit of an LGBTQIA+ hub, and I love that it is near my house and the Espy—all my favourite places together. There are queer-based radio stations, a bookshop, and it’s just a great information centre.”
“Luna Park is this really old, cheeky theme park that’s right next door to the Palais Theatre, which is an old, seated-style venue that is very historic. Luna Park’s got some great rides and a very memorable entrance with this big face that you have to walk under to enter.”
“St Kilda Pier is just iconic, and it’s right on the beach. During summer, the beach is really beautiful at night. There’s also some penguins, and you can see them hanging out, being cute, and it’s gorgeous.”
“GoBoats are these little boats you can take your mates on, bring food and drinks and go along the river in Melbourne—in the middle of the city—and see beautiful views while driving your own little boat. You don’t need your driver’s licence, and it’s a fun little adventure. Once a year, I’ll come when I’m back home—me and my friends will get one, take some drinks and have a great time.”
“The Forum Theatre is my dream venue to play at. It’s near Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, and it’s this beautiful old venue. The roof is like a starry sky, and I’ve actually got three shows coming up there, which I’m very excited about.”
“This is the best tattoo shop in Melbourne. It’s also one of the biggest shops in the whole of Australia, and my friend Cholo founded this place. Me and Cholo have a cute history: When I was an up-and-coming musician and he was an up-and-coming tattoo artist, we both used to hang out and talk about our dreams and what we’re gonna do when we’re older. He’d always tell me one day he’s gonna have his own shop, and I used to say that one day I’m going to be a solo artist.”
“This is one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne. It’s also in St Kilda, right near the Pride Centre. And it’s just a really awesome family-run restaurant. They also do really great breakfast, and their pastas and pizzas are amazing.”
“Half Moon Bay, specifically, is where I grew up, near this beach, and I have very fond memories of being near here in summer, hanging, watching sunsets every night.”
“Another music venue in Melbourne, this is an outdoor amphitheatre, and I had the pleasure of playing it last year. It’s a really good vibe, a good venue, and great for little open-air concerts.”
