In Osaka for 24 hours? Explore the best of the city.
Less9AM : Offer up an early-morning prayer to the gods at the Shitenno-ji temple, then go for a jog around the vast Ten-Shiba green space at the entrance to Tennoji Park, at the foot of the Abeno Harukas building.
10AM : Take a break for an organic drip coffee in the stylish glass, wood and metal interior of Blue Bottle Coffee in Umeda. On the upper floor, marvel at the Sense Lounge, an immersive video installation by digital artist Panoramatiks.
NOON : Stroll through the bustling streets of Temma, whose shops seem frozen in time. Near the noisy arcades of Ikeda-cho, visit Gendouguten, the studio of designer Miwa Gen, located in an ordinary apartment building. Admire her hand-blown glasses, wooden cutlery, leather boxes and natural rice-bran candles.
1PM : Enjoy a superb gastronomic experience at La Cime, an innovative Franco-Japanese restaurant run by the brilliant chef Yusuke Takada, who cooks up his signature, seasonal dishes in a dark and mysterious yet undeniably relaxing setting.
3PM : Drop in at the elegant café and tea room Moto Coffee serving delicious drinks with divine cakes and pastries – try the house-made clafoutis – in a minimalist decor of antique and modern Japanese and Scandi furniture. Afterwards, check out the adjoining art and craft gallery, Shelf.
5PM : Indulge in a shopping spree at the chic Inside My Glass Doors fashion store run by Shinya Fujita. Synonymous with elegant, cutting-edge style, the shop was designed by Teruhiro Yanagihara, the man behind the Arita showroom in Saga and the Momota Touen outlet at Tokyo’s Palace Hotel. Look out for rare pieces among brands such as Seya, Writtenafterwards, Kota Gushiken and more.
7PM : Wind down with an aperitif at the counter of Kaffe Bar Nellie wine and cocktail bar. A subtle jazzy and 1980s vinyl soundtrack adds to the urban charm of its high-ceilinged designer interior. Order a dish of grilled veggies to stave off any hunger pangs.
8PM : Join some of Osaka’s most demanding diners, who make a point of reserving one of the eleven seats at the counter at Taian. Renowned chef Hitoshi Takahata satisfies them with meticulous kappo-style kaiseki dishes, prepared in generous portions.
10PM : Savour a cocktail at the Kirip Truman speakeasy and cocktail lounge, opened by self-taught mixologist Toru Kiriyama. Enjoy the jazzy atmosphere, impressive range of drinks and views over the city and Tosahori River.
MIDNIGHT : Dance the night away to sets by some of Kansai’s top DJs at Club Daphnia, an Osaka temple of electronic music, in the post-industrial district of Kitakagaya. Finding it can be a challenge: look out for the neon sign of three Japanese characters in red, yellow and green.
7AM : Enjoy a delicious breakfast of avocado toast, takoyaki, sweet-and-sour tamagoyaki omelettes, fresh fruit and a smoothie in the Oh.lala buffet upstairs at the W Hotel, while soaking up the view of Midosuji Boulevard.
