DJ/producer Myrne appreciates the quality of life in Singapore that fuels his creative process. "You can have uninterupted focus here, plus you'll have the best night out in Singapore," he smiles. These are Myrne's top spots in The Garden City.
Less"Every band who has made a name for themselves at some point in Singapore's music history has probably played here. Blu Jaz Cafe is one of those really longstanding places that hosts so much live music and is a big force in Singapore's music scene. Performers play all kinds of music here, not just jazz but also blues and singer/songwriter. It's three stories of entertainment that also includes a Greek restaurant and bar so it's always packed."
"Zouk is in the middle of Clark Quay, which is a bustling nightlife area with tons of bars, clubs, and restaurants. The whole area is just pretty iconic because it sits on the bank of the Singapore River. Zouk is special to me because it was where I played my first DJ gig, back in 2015, when I opened for Cashmere Cat. Fast forward a few years, and now I've got my own headlining shows there. I've tons of good memories at Zouk."
"Ever since I moved to the area about ten years ago, I’ve been going to this spot for chicken rice. In fact, the entire area is rife with great food gems. A great chicken rice has a lot to do with how the skin sits on top of the chicken— the skin needs to slide off beautifully. If the chicken is great, you know the rice is going to be great as well. They serve delicious pandan oil rice with the chicken here. It’s so decadent. I probably shouldn’t eat it as much as I do."
"This is without question the best spot to eat wonton noodles in Singapore. My girlfriend found this spot at a nearby hawker center, and we go every few weeks now. The noodles and the sauce just go really, really good together. The noodles aren’t really soggy–they have the perfect bite and with the sauce it’s a really tasty and perfect dish."
"I love this spot. It’s in an area known for finding great dim sum, but there are a couple of great curry places, including this spot. It’s a little stall that serves delicious rice just completely drenched in Cantonese curry. It’s really decadent. Every public holiday, there’s will be a really long queue for it it. People just flock to it."
"I really love walking. It’s a fun thing to do, and I consider it a hobby. I just put on my headphones and go for a walk. I may be dealing with some deadlines, and walking makes me feel a lot better. In Singapore we have these connected walking trails that are called Park Connected Networks, or PCNs. The one I like is the walk is right along the Kallang River. It’s one of those half city, half nature type of walks. It’s beautiful and so relaxing."
"This is actually a park for cyclists, but it’s great for walking as well. Imagine a regular park but made for bicycles, so it has big roads with designated areas to sprint. There are some really great cafes and food spots here. PS.Cafe is good here for example. I live in the central region, so I get here using the Park Connector Network, which will take me about 2 hours. It’s really pretty here with the beach, and usually it’s a little windy too. Very relaxing."
"Another area where I like to exercise is Bedok Reservoir. This place also has personal meaning to me. I used to be part of the national kayaking team and, I would do some of my training at Bedok Reservoir. When I was in junior college, I was here four times a week, just kayaking up and down. And if there was incoming weather, we'd have to run the length of Bedok, which I think is around 4.5 kilometers. So I like to walk there. It’s very relaxing."
"Sinamex is a music production store in a mall that is reminiscent of old Singapore with internet cafes and KTVs. You can find all kinds of gear at Sinamex that you wouldn’t find anywhere else except online. The people are really nice and helped me out when I started making music. I bought my first keyboard here actually. I bought a zoom recorder here, too, which is a device to record ambient sounds with really high precision."
"[I highly recommend this spot.] It was opened by DJ KoFlow from Chou Pi Jiang so the music curation is always on point!"
