Less"Every dish I’ve had here is amazing. I am obsessed with their buffalo oyster salad, bayou nachos, and their key lime pie, just to name a few dishes. The service is always really great. It's on the Joseph M. Bartholomew Golf Course; Joe Bartholomew was the first Black man to design and build a public golf course. It's a beautiful space in Gentilly."
"There are very few Black-owned businesses in the French Quarter. Cafe Sbisa has its roots back to the 1800s, is one of my faves, and is located in the Quarter. It's the perfect place to celebrate special occasions or for a nice night out in the city. There's a private area for groups. You get a full upscale dining experience. Their Trout Eugene is delicious: It's a filet of trout topped with shrimp and crawfish tails. The drinks are really good, too."
"Afrodisiac is a Jamaican Creole fusion restaurant. It was previously a food truck, but the owners have expanded to their own building in Gentilly. Every single thing that you get from the restaurant is made there. Their jerk nachos are amazing: They're made with jerk chicken, a mango-corn-tomato salsa, beans and cheese and onions, and together it creates a really delicious and super-filling dish. There's a gorgeous outdoor patio where you can sit and enjoy music and sunshine."
"AJ's is a walk-up type of place, in an area of New Orleans that people refer to as 'under the bridge.' It's a place where you can go for an elevated home-cooked meal with unbelievable flavor. You can't sit in, but there's limited seating and you'll typically see people taking out. My favorite dish there is the salmon bowl, which is sautéed in a teriyaki-like sauce with onions and peppers and served with Parmesan broccoli on the side."
"Williby's is another type of experience. Of all the places that I've named, it's got to be the least fancy place, but it's the coolest. When you walk in, you see a pool that the owners built—full of live catfish! They're all swimming around, waiting to get caught. They're fished out of the pool, put on the chopping block, skinned, and fried. They can fry a mean piece of catfish."
"Backatown is a coffee shop, but there's so much more to it than that. It's a community hub. It's very aesthetically pleasing. It's also a productivity center--people are in there having meetings. It's run by a husband and wife who are very active in their community. The coffee is really good, and they serve excellent savory dishes and pastries, many of which are made from their own family recipes and some of which are sourced locally. They also carry some really cute merchandise."
"This is a Black-owned French restaurant in the Warehouse District owned by Ms. Vyoone, who is from New Orleans is a shining star on the New Orleans culinary scene. The food is excellent: I absolutely love the cheese and sausage boards. She does an excellent brunch on the weekends. Her French onion soup is award-winning. I love her white chocolate raspberry bread pudding. The space is gorgeous and often booked for special events."
"People go to Morrow's for a vibe. The chef, Lenora Chong, is Black and Korean, and she combines her background into some amazing dishes, like a gumbo ramen that's served on Thursdays. I love their salads, and their crawfish bread is the best version of crawfish bread I've ever had. The drinks are always cute and they pack a punch."
"B Sweet Bistro is a super cute place to have dessert, but the savory food is really good, too. She has my favorite gumbo in the city, on Thursdays and Sundays. It can be served with grilled cheese, like we used to have in elementary school. Her desserts are grandiose! Over the top! They're beautiful, and they taste good as well. I love the space and atmosphere in the French Quarter, right across from Louis Armstrong Park."
"Chicken's Kitchen has a menu that changes daily. The food comes in generous portions, and there's often a line extending past the building! The lines don't lie; the food is affordable and just really good. I absolutely love the mac and cheese and Brussels sprouts. The fried ribs are great as well. I haven't tried the oxtails, but people go crazy for them, and they're next up on my list."
"Cafe Porche has the most amazing brunch food. Every single item that I've had has been excellent. I like to eat the French toast plain, with no syrup. The grits are thick and creamy, the breakfast potatoes are perfectly seasoned, and the fish is fried to perfection. It's excellent brunch food."
"Hands-down the absolute best doughnuts are at Mr. B's! In New Orleans, generally doughnuts are made fresh daily, so every day Mr. B's doughnuts are available until they are sold out. All his other pastries, from his cinnamon rolls to his cake slices to his lemon-filled doughnuts, are just delicious. He also does hot food, which is really good, if you want to stop in for breakfast or lunch."
"Nice Guys has a great vibe. They bring in DJs on the weekends. The food is delicious. I love their shrimp and grits. The pancakes are out of this world. On Hot Box Wednesdays, they serve Chinese fried rice with seafood-boil sides that'll change your life!"
