For 5x All-Star and Knicks forward-center Karl-Anthony Towns, NYC isn't just a city—it's everything. "New York is the land of opportunity," he says, "a place where I showcase my talent to an amazing fan base and live out my dreams."
Less"It's the mecca! The mecca of basketball, the mecca of entertainment. As a Knicks player, I'm happy to call it home. The energy when you're playing here is unlike anywhere else; you feel the history, the greatness. Growing up in New Jersey, we came into the city often, and my mom revered MSG as a place for special occasions. It held such high prestige in my household. Now it's crazy that I call it home, a place I work at all the time. It's a full circle moment!"
"I absolutely love the Whitney! Actually, I was just here for my girlfriend's birthday. They were so kind, they gave us a sneak peek of the new show! Seeing the amazing art here is always awesome. I've seen the Basquiats a bunch! And Amy Sherald's recent show was incredible. It was inspiring to see such powerful and beautiful work from a woman of color. Seriously, it's just amazing to see everything they have!"
"The Corner Store is definitely my spot. I go here after games, even in the playoffs. I really love it. The food? It's kind of hard to describe. It's like a bistro with a French-American vibe, but it's really its own thing. They have great nonalcoholic drinks. I usually get the Caesar salad, the crudo, and you have to get the apple pie. It's like an elevated McDonald's version. For the main course, I usually go with the salmon, blackened Cajun style. So good!"
"Comedy Cellar's a great spot. When I was on the Wolves [Minnesota Timberwolves] and we were in New York, I always tried to go. They always showed love. Just catching amazing acts, blending in, experiencing a real New York night, that's what it's about. I love stand-up, so it's always cool to go. I recently saw Godfrey, which was awesome. We even made some videos after—turns out he's a Knicks fan and we're both Dominican! Good times."
"Via Carota has amazing Italian food. I brought some friends here recently; we wanted to try something new and get some good Italian. Everyone really enjoyed it. I've been back since, and it was just as good. They have a nice wine room, a little private space in the city. I usually go for the basil pesto, but the cacio e pepe is really good. They have great lemon pastas and a good Bolognese. Oh, and a Meyer lemon risotto! They even have a great grilled chicken. I highly recommend the place!
“I'm a big fan of Joe's Pizza. It has been a staple in New York for, what, over 50 years? Every time I've come to New York playing, when I was on the Timberwolves, I used to always get myself a Joe's Pizza slice to remind myself of home. It's my favorite pie in the city. They don't do a lot of toppings, but I usually get a cheese pizza and get some crushed red peppers on the side, and I put that on top and enjoy them executing their fundamentals correctly in the best way possible in New York.”
“As a basketball player in New York, everything's late! Nobu 57th is closed after the game so downtown Nobu is the spot to decompress. It's one of my favorite restaurants ever. It has a private room where I've had great times with former teammates like Rudy Gobert. My order? You sure you want the whole thing? All right, here we go: baby spinach dried miso salad, yellowtail jalapeños, white fish tiradito, grilled chicken teriyaki. Am I forgetting anything?"
"I love movies! What's great about AMC Lincoln Square? They have seats that actually fit a seven-footer like me, so I can finally enjoy a movie comfortably. Plus, they have the high-end IMAX and 4DX experiences. Being comfortable while watching the art that these directors, studios and producers are making is pretty dope."
"I love the Yankees. They've always been my favorite team. Growing up, I remember adjusting the TV's antenna just to get a clear picture of the games. I've been to a bunch of games, even playoff games. I'm at Yankee Stadium whenever I can. It's one of my favorite places. I even saw the Savannah Bananas play here!"
"It's brand new, close to MSG, so it's super convenient. Really nice, with great brands that my girl loves. I always need coffee, and they have a great shop. They have stores for everyone—it's luxe, but accessible. Plus, it's close to the Whitney, so I can shop and then go see the Basquiats!"
