In the endless stream of good and bad news, there’s one story everyone can get behind: Paris’s summer terraces are back for you to enjoy until the weather cools off! So without further ado, here are Le Fooding’s 10 favorite sun-drenched terraces.
LessThe Godaille terrace gets plenty of direct sunshine starting from ten until three in the afternoon. That’s more than enough time to grab one of the seats warmed from above, facing Square Trousseau, and indulge in a neo-bistro lunch: oeuf mayo with violet mustard from Brive; pollack with white asparagus from the Landes, Soubise sauce with smoked paprika and preserved lemon; chocolate tart with puffed kasha and coffee mascarpone… And plenty of wine to wash it all down! Hot stuff coming through!
Heard that vitamin D is good for your bones? You’ll get plenty of it at Nonos! Once seated in the Hotel Crillon’s chic and peaceful inner courtyard, which gets lots of natural light from 10:30am until nightfall, Top Chef extraordinaire Paul Pairet’s team will leave you spoilt for choice with their generous menu: made-to-order steak-frites, dry-aged rib-eye steak, grilled chicken, sausage and mash, sautéed turbot and even a few vegetarian shared snacks. You’ll always be basking in the sun here!
The true definition of la dolce vita? Pasta, terrazza, e basta! For a taste of all that, head to the terrace at Localino, where the sun embraces you just like in Roma, from 11:30am to 2pm! Right in time for an authentic Italian lunch, featuring the likes of spaghetti alla Nerano (garlic, zucchini and provolone), maccheroncini al ragù d’anatra (duck confit), along with scallop and asparagus risotto… To drink? Some spirited transalpine wines, naturally… for a dazzling slice of Italy!
Wandering around West Paris? Head to the quietest terrace in the city, carefully hidden away in the courtyard of the aptly named L’Eldorado hotel. Surrounded by a lush urban jungle, the tables draped in white linens catch a few rays from 2:30pm to 4:30pm… The ideal spot for sunbathing after a lunch of crispy asparagus, zucchini and shiso fritto, or a mouthwatering seafood vol-au-vent made with clams, sea bream, mushrooms and lemony cream… Unless you’d rather opt for a sun-soaked afternoon snack?
There’s no fuss at the Adar épicerie and café, where the (big) lone table is bathed in natural light from 11am to 1:30pm. So, indulge in a luminous feast of beautiful mezze, like roasted cauliflower, fresh anchovies or marinated sardines, along with a combo of beef and pearl couscous, wild garlic, broccoletti and squash… And for a treat afterwards? There’s pillowy challah, small croissants known as rugelach, babka or halva tiramisu… So many sweets that will warm you up heart and soul.
Hot tip: the uncompromising Mamiche Traiteur has set up a lovely terrace for when the weather’s nice, perfect for al fresco dining from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. You’ll hardly know where to stick your fork first, between the respectable Caesar salad, hearty lasagna, delish quiches, unbeatable sausage roll in homemade flaky pastry, and the plethora of desserts – tiramisu, cookies, chocolate mousse, homemade versions of Snickers bars and Savane cakes… Everything you need to really heat things up.
If you couldn’t resist the sight of the elegant Grand Mazarin hotel, we wouldn’t blame you… At one of the twenty covers illuminated from 2:30pm to 4:30pm, indulge at Boubalé (“my beloved grandmother” in Yiddish): the restaurant dreamt up by Israeli chef Assaf Granit will take you on a tour of Eastern Europe without ever leaving the table, via salmon gravlax marinated in arak and beet juice, Uzbek mantu (lamb dumplings) or traditional strudel with yogurt cream… Radiant smiles guaranteed.
What if we decided to cross the ring road for a change? Head with us to Boulogne, where Bonnotte’s nice little terrace gets plenty of sunshine from 1:30pm until sunset. There’s lots to enjoy from lunch through dinner, with two distinct vibes: bistro plates at lunch (dry-aged steak tartare with olive oil, capers, Parmesan, lemon condiment and egg yolk confit), and a tasting menu at night (scallops and héliantis with lardo di Colonnata, sole meunière…). Don’t forget dessert or your sunscreen!
After a sun-fueled day, let your skin be kissed by the last rays of sunshine… Head to Saint-Germain-des-Prés, where Cravan’s Left Bank rooftop bar is waiting for you with one of the smallest outdoor cinemas in the world! For a perfect moment in time, sip a delicate Royal Basilic (Ruinart Champagne and a basil flower infusion) or the delightful Cambo (vermouth, tonic and caper juice), alongside a few globetrotting plates – lobster rolls, veal tonnato carpaccio… What a beautiful evening!
