The chef behind the buzzy Chinatown banchan and wine destination Sunn’s dishes on some of her top restaurants to eat out in the city.
LessThis MICHELIN-Starred downtown bistro from chef Ignacio Mattos remains a favorite for its extensive wine list, creative cocktails, and iconic dishes like its endive salad. Why Sunny loves it: “Iconic restaurant that was once my former employer, that has long been an absolute favorite of mine. The endive salad is to me the most perfect salad I’ve ever eaten. So much talent has come out of that kitchen like Sam Lawrence from Bridges and Zack Zeidman from Chez Fifi, two of my favorite chefs.”
Executive chef Quang Nguyen and sous chef Dina Fan lead you on an exciting journey of European-inspired dishes like beef tongue tonnato alongside an exceptional wine list at this West Village gem. Why Sunny loves it: “Quang Nyugen is one of my favorite chefs in NYC, and is also a dear friend of mine. What he and Dina Fan are doing with Demo and Bufon is incredible. Whenever I go to Demo, I always make sure to get the house bread, squid salad, crispy rice, and pudding dessert!”
The Frenchette team is behind the revival of this iconic bistro. You can look forward to classics like poached lobster and île flottante on the prix-fixe menu. Why Sunny loves it: “I had such a memorable meal there with my husband; the room is so perfect and charming and captures a time and place in NYC. The egg in beef consomme gelee with mirepoix and the frog legs Provinçale are forever embedded in my heart. The team at Le Veau D’Or are some of my favorite people in hospitality."
The South of France and chef Maxime Pradie’s Franco-Italian roots set the stage for dishes like black cod with saffron, mussels, and rice. Pair it with a selection from the impressive French and Italian wine list. Why Sunny loves it: “I love chef Maxime Pradie’s food so much, it is so fresh and vibrant. I had a really lovely meal there, and remember the herby panisse, ratatouille, and the pasta Davia in particular. I also am a HUGE fan of Clodagh Manning’s desserts."
Dishes like crispy sweet and sour fish and a wine list curated by Parcelle have rightfully earned chef Ron Yan’s restaurant a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand. Why Sunny loves it: “Go sit at the bar and order too much food. Chef Ron Yan is a very talented chef, and such a great neighbor to us at Sunn’s. I particularly recommend the little rice noodles, salt and pepper tofu, the pork chop, and the mango sticky rice dessert.”
Come experience the depth and breadth of Caribbean cooking through acclaimed chef Paul Carmichael’s prix-fixe menu at this Momofuku restaurant. Why Sunny loves it: “Chef Paul Carmichael has come back home to open one of the most exciting restaurants NYC has seen in a very long time. He cooks with passion and gusto, and has the greatest welcoming smile when you see him. Get all the patties if you sit at Bar Kabawa and the daiquiris!”
This follow up to the MICHELIN-Starred Contra is all about next-level cocktails and playful dishes, including some revivals from the old spot. Why Sunny loves it: “NYC’s dearest duo Jeremiah Stone and Fabian Von Hauske partnered with Dave Arnold, legendary food scientist, to open the suavest cocktail bar in the neighborhood with all of the suave cocktail bars. Grab your boo, get some cocktails, and get the beef tartare, scallop, stuffed chicken wings, and all of Fabian’s desserts.”
New Yorkers keep coming back to Frank Falcinelli and Frank Castronovo’s beloved restaurant for favorites like the sausage and broccoli rabe sandwich and the meatballs with pine nuts and raisins. Why Sunny loves it: “I’ve been eating at Frankies Spuntino since I moved to NYC in 2008, and it is still just as delicious now as when I had it for the first time. If I go for lunch, I always get the BLT. If I go for dinner, I get a couple of their salads and pastas (cavatelli forever!)."
Just steps from Madison Square Garden and Penn Station, the Dynamo Room is the place you want to go to for stylish cocktails, swanky lunches, and a classic steakhouse experience. Why Sunny loves it: “This is an absolutely beautiful and breathtaking restaurant opened by Sunday Hospitality, right next door to MSG. I’m a big fan of chef Derek Boccagno and chef Jaime Young’s food. I had a really excellent dinner here, and I’m planning my next dinner there for a post-Knicks game."
Near Transmitter Park, this airy and greenery-filled restaurant serves creative Vietnamese food from chef and owner Caroline Hahm. Why Sunny loves it: “This little gem in Greenpoint is helmed by chef Caroline Hahm and is a really delicious Vietnamese restaurant that I love to go to often. The hospitality is so warm, and the food is so delicious. I love to get the papaya salad, chicken wings, spring rolls, and their pork sausage Bánh hỏi. Say hi to chef Caroline."
